ACT Practice Tests

Free ACT Practice tests to help you increase your ACT score!

27 Best ACT Practice Tests (Free, PDFs, Authentic, and More!)

The best way to prepare for the ACT is to take ACT practice tests, analyze your performance on these practice tests, and determine the mistakes you made so you won’t make them again in the future. But, it can be hard to find a good number of authentic ACT practice tests to practice with.

So, to make things as easy as possible for you, here is the most comprehensive list of ACT practice tests on the Internet, in the most organized format. When you finish a practice test, simply come back to this page to grab the next one!

Comprehensive List of Free ACT Practice Tests

Preparing for the ACT PDFsThe Preparing for the ACT booklets are released by the ACT itself and contain authentic ACT practice tests. They are one of the best resources you can use to prepare for the ACT because the scores you receive from these practice tests are the scores that you would have received for the actual ACT.

The problem with ACT practice tests that are not released by the ACT is that they will not be as accurate in determining the score you would get on an actual ACT. Practice tests created by other companies are merely imitation practice tests that are not the real thing. Some of these outside “ACT practice tests” may be easier than the actual ACT, which would cause you to believe that you would do better on the ACT, and some of them are harder than the actual ACT, which could unnecessarily discourage you even before you take the ACT.

Although these Preparing for the ACT booklets are one of the best resources you can use to prepare for the ACT, one major shortfall of them is that they do not contain answer explanations for the practice test questions. However, if you are good at self-learning, you should be able to figure out yourself why you got a particular question wrong and understand why the correct answer is indeed correct. This way, you can overcome the shortfall of not having answer explanations in these booklets.

Another thing to note with the Preparing for the ACT booklets is that many of the practice tests are duplicates. Although 11 Preparing for the ACT booklets have been released, there are actually only five unique practice tests from these 11 booklets. Below, we will provide links to all of the Preparing for the ACT booklets, as well as make notes on which ones are duplicates of one another.

More Practice Tests

Below, we will provide links to ACT practice tests that are not directly from the ACT. Although these tests are not authentic, they can still provide good practice for concepts that you will see on the actual ACT. You should not use the scores you get on these practice tests as a gauge for what you might get on an actual ACT, but rather, you should simply use them to practice, learn, and perfect concepts that often show up on the ACT.

Here they are:

And there you have it! 27 ACT practice tests for you to use in your preparations for the ACT! There are certainly countless other resources for preparing for the ACT out there, but the ACT practice tests listed above should be more than enough to provide you with all the practice you need for the ACT. It is unlikely that you will even have enough time to take all of those practice tests in your preparations for the ACT!

Step-by-Step: How to Make the Most of Each ACT Practice Test

Step 1: Start by breaking the practice test into smaller chunks (1 passage/section at a time)

For the first practice test that you take, just take one passage or section at a time. That way, you can analyze your performance after each chunk and make improvements for the next chunk that you take. If you take an entire test in one go, you won’t be able to make any improvements until after you finish the entire test, which could be wasteful.

Step 2: Move on to taking larger chunks at a time (e.g., 2 passages)

For the next 1-2 practice tests that you take, take 2-3 passages, or half the math test, at a time. This way, you get a feel for taking more of the test, but you can still make improvements after each larger chunk of the test that you take.

Step 3: Move on to taking a full section of the ACT at a time (e.g., the entire ACT English test)

Next, instead of taking the entire ACT in one go, just take one entire section. That way, you can focus on developing your skills and strategies for that section.

Step 4: Move on to taking an entire ACT practice test

After you feel comfortable with your skills and strategies for each separate section of the ACT, then it is time to take on an entire ACT practice test under realistic timing conditions.

Overview of the ACT Test

If you are not familiar with the format of the ACT, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with it before you start taking ACT practice tests. This way, you can go into each practice test with a specific plan for time, rather than simply winging the test. Not having a plan for time is one main reason why many students receive low scores on the ACT.

ACT English Format

The ACT English section is a 45 minute test that consists of 5 passages of 15 questions each, or 75 total questions. This means that you should spend less than one minute on each question.

ACT Math Format

The ACT math section is a 60 minute test that consists of 60 questions. The questions at the beginning of the test are easier than the questions at the end of the test, so you should plan on working faster at the beginning, or else you may not have enough time for the questions at the end.

ACT Reading Format

The ACT reading section is a 35 minute test that consists of 4 passages of 10 questions each, or 40 total questions. This means you should spend about 8 minutes 45 seconds on each passage.

ACT Science Format

The ACT science section is a 35 minute test that consists of 6 passages2 passages will be 6 questions each, and 4 passages will be 7 questions each, which adds up to a total of 40 questions. You should plan on spending about 6-7 minutes per passage.

ACT Writing Format

The ACT writing section is a 40 minute test that consists of 1 writing prompt.

ACT practice test

This ACT practice test page contains a collection of more practice tests in one place than any other website. We not only have links to countless free practice tests, but we also review the quality of these practice tests.

Note: Not All ACT Practice Tests are Equal

The Only Real ACT Practice Tests Available

There is only a very limited number of real ACT practice tests that use actual questions from old ACT tests, and these practice tests are available only from the ACT itself. The ACT does not make old ACT tests public.

Therefore, outside of the ACT practice tests from The Real ACT Prep Guide and the Preparing for the ACT booklets, all of the other “ACT practice tests” out there are technically imitation practice tests. Although some of them are better than others, and some of them are pretty close to the actual ACT, if you want a good prediction of how well you will do on the actual ACT, the best ACT practice tests to take are those from The Real ACT Prep Guide and the Preparing for the ACT booklets.

The Usefulness and Danger of Other ACT Practice Tests

Other ACT practice tests can all be useful for additional practice to prepare more fully for the ACT. The more practice problems you do, the better you will get at answering the kinds of questions you will see on the ACT.

However, you must be realistic in your approach to using these other practice tests. Many supposed ACT practice tests are actually easier than the actual ACT. This can be dangerous because if you take the scorse from these easier practice tests seriously, you might have false confidence approaching the ACT, and then experience shock when you realize how difficult the ACT actually is.

On the other hand, some practice tests are harder than the actual ACT. Although this can be good because these ACT practice tests might overprepare you for the ACT and thus make the ACT seem easier by comparison, this can also be bad if these practice tests hurt your confidence as you approach the ACT. It is important to approach the ACT with confidence because the ACT requires mental preparation in addition to content and strategy preparation.

Using ACT Practice Test PDF Files: A Warning

act practice test pdf
When using these ACT practice test PDFs, make sure you understand that not all ACT practice tests are real ACT practice tests, and thus not all of them are accurate. Some of these practice tests are better than others.

This is important to remember because taking practice tests that are easier than the actual ACT can result in a false confidence that might lead to surprise and shock when you take the actual ACT. Likewise, taking practice tests that are inaccurate can lead to a false belief that you know what to expect from the ACT.

Here, we will review each of thsee ACT practice test PDF files so you know how seriously to take the ACT scores you get from them. While all of these tests can be useful, do not take all of these scores equally seriously. Some provide better predictions for how well you will actually do on the ACT than others.

Preparing for the ACT: Links to the ACT Prep Booklet

Real ACT Practice Test Questions!

Besides the real ACT practice tests from The Real ACT Prep Guide, the only other real ACT practice tests out there are the ones found in the Preparing for the ACT booklets. These booklets are created by the creators of the ACT themselves, so they are great resources.

However, the two limitations of these booklets are that it can be hard to find past editions and these booklets do not contain explanations for the answers. Nevertheless, this booklet is an invaluable resource for ACT practice tests and finding out just how prepared you are for the ACT. The ACT scores you get from these real ACT practice tests will be pretty accurate to what you would actually score on the ACT.

For your convenience, we have found as many of the Preparing for the ACT booklets as we could find, so that you do not need to waste valuable time searching for them. This is the largest collection of past editions of these ACT prep booklets anywhere.

Since the ACT practice tests found in these booklets are such valuable resources, you might want to share them with your friends, so that they can be fully prepared for the ACT test as well.

preparing for the act

Although these booklets contain great ACT practice tests, they are not enough by themselves to fully prepare for the ACT. Because these booklets are written by the creators of the ACT, they do not reveal the “secrets” to mastering the ACT.

The creators of the ACT do not want to provide the best strategies for taking the ACT because the ACT is designed to separate out students who are ready for college and are willing to put in the necessary preparations to do well on the ACT from the students who did not spend time preparing well for the ACT.

Comparing ACT Practice Tests: The Best and the Worst

Not all ACT practice tests are created equal

Not all ACT practice tests are equal in value, content, and difficulty. Most of the “ACT Practice Tests” out there are imitation practice tests, and therefore they can be easier or harder than the actual ACT and give you an inaccurate predication of what your actual ACT score might be. For information about the only book that contains real ACT practice tests, visit this page:

The Real ACT Prep Guide: Real ACT Practice Tests

It is important to understand the differences between the different ACT practice tests out there—they can all be helpful and beneficial, but you need to know how to use them in the right way. Furthermore, some are definitely better than others. This article will help you sort through the different ACT practice test options you have, as well as provide suggestions for how to use each practice test effectively.

Princeton Review: The Next Best ACT Practice Tests, and Good Preparation Material

Cracking the ACT

The Princeton Review has an ACT prep book titled Cracking the ACT, and its practice tests are generally regarded as the closest to real ACT practice tests out of all the imitation ACT practice tests out there. This book also contains good preparation and review for the ACT. Out of all of the ACT prep books out there, we give Cracking the ACT our highest recommendation.

Buy Princeton Review’s Cracking the ACT from Amazon here: Amazon.com – Cracking the ACT with 4 Practice Tests & DVD, 2014 Edition.

Kaplan: Easier ACT Practice Tests and Pretty Good Preparation Material

Kaplan ACT Prep Book
Kaplan, like Princeton Review, is a renowned test prep company, with a plethora of resources, preparatory material, and practice tests. Most people consider Kaplan’s ACT practice tests to be easier than the actual ACT. Therefore, while these practice tests can be helpful, do not take these scores as seriously as you would the practice tests from The Real ACT Prep Guide or Princeton Review’s Cracking the ACT

Kaplan’s review material, which differs slightly from Princeton Review’s material, can also be helpful for ACT test prep.

Buy Kaplan’s ACT prep book from Amazon here: Amazon.com – Kaplan ACT 2014 Premier with 6 Practice Tests: Book + Online + DVD + mobile.

Barron’s ACT 36: For Practice with Tougher ACT Questions and Passages

Barron's ACT 36

This book provides tougher ACT questions and passages to fully prepare students for the ACT, so they will not be surprised by anything. If students can master these questions and passages, they should have absolutely nothing to fear from the ACT. The questions found in this book are intentionally designed to be the hardest that you might encounter on the ACT.

The Real ACT Prep Guide: Real ACT Practice Tests

There is currently only one book out there that contains actual, real, retired ACT practice tests: The Real ACT Prep Guide. It is worth it to get this book, because it contains the only ACT practice tests that will truly give you an accurate prediction of how well you will actually do on the ACT.

The Real ACT Prep Guide

Real ACT Prep Guide
Amazon sells this book for a great price—click on either the picture or the link to go straight to the Amazon page to buy The Real ACT Prep Guide: Amazon.com – The Real ACT Prep Guide.

After you buy this book, do not begin taking the ACT practice tests right away. You want to make sure you get the most out of these practice tests, and simply taking these practice tests without the correct approach can actually be counter-productive.

This Book Alone is Not Enough

Although this book contains the best real ACT practice tests, it does not contain the best preparation for the ACT, so having this book alone is not enough. The creators of the ACT do not want to reveal all of the best “secrets” to doing well on the ACT because the ACT is designed to separate out students who are willing to put in the extra time and effort to do well on the ACT.

Therefore, taking these practice tests without the proper strategies may simply reinforce bad habits. Make sure you also explore the rest of Best ACT Prep to learn the best ACT test-taking strategies.

Having The Real ACT Prep Guide along with the ACT prep information and strategies that we provide is the best combination to prepare for the ACT. To learn more about the ACT and the best strategies for taking the ACT, visit these pages at Best ACT Prep:

ACT Preparation: Introduction to ACT Prep – Click here to find introductory articles about what is the ACT, the format of the ACT, what is a good ACT score, how to begin studying for the ACT, and more.

The articles here organize the information you need to know about each section of the ACT so that you do not need to waste time doing other research yourself.

These strategies are a complilation of the best ideas out there about how to take the ACT, and there are some strategies here that no other ACT prep book or guide covers.

Real ACT Prep Guide

Other “ACT Practice Tests”

Be careful about using other “ACT Practice Tests.” They may claim to be close to the actual ACT in content and difficulty, and some of them may be, but they are still imitations that may give you an inaccurate view of how prepared you actually are for the ACT.
